Ambassadors Unit
Welcome to Al Amira No. 157, Daughters Of The Nile. We are so excited to have you join us. Thinking about becoming an Ambassador but not sure what we do? As outlined in our by-laws, our responsibilities include assisting the Queen as needed during Installations, Ceremonials, and Temple Stated Sessions. This involves tasks such as guarding doors, welcoming and aiding members, and managing activities like guest book attendance, ticket distribution.
Every four years, we proudly serve as the Official Unit for our Queen at Supreme
Session. Our regular meetings take place on the third Wednesday of each month
from September to June, with summer sessions scheduled upon member request, all held in Biff’s Lounge within the Al Shamal Shrine Centre.

Al Amira Book Lovers Group
The Al Amira Book Lovers Group was formed 2 years ago and has been very successful with 14 members. We meet on the fourth Thursday of the month at 6:30PM in Biff’s Lounge. Sometimes we meet in the summer and sometimes we don’t. Our rules are very relaxed. We run slightly differently than most book clubs. Rather than all reading the same book, we read the same author and then discuss the books, author’s style etc at our meetings. Some of us read more than one of the books for the author of the month, some read only one book, some don’t finish the book and some even don’t start the book. Life gets in the way and you are welcome to join us whichever category you fit into. Join us one evening and see what you’re missing!

Al Amira Temple Dancers
Al Amira Temple Dancers were originally known as the Sakkara Temple Dancers – Edmonton. When Al Amira Temple was constituted in 1991, the Unit became the Al Amira Temple Dancers. The Unit thrived under the leadership of our Dance Directors: Pr. Marjorie Lindsay (1990 – 1993), PQ Deanna Robertson (1994 – 2004), Pr. Beverly Chapman ( 2005 – 2011), PQ Shirley Harris ( 2011 – 2019), and PQ Robyn Beyersbergen ( 2020 - ). The Unit owes a great deal to our choreographer and instructor, Collette Featherstone who has graciously offered her services to the Unit for many years.
The members in 1990 were Princesses Diane Borowski, Dorothy Burke, Margery Dobson, Lois Forbes, Donna Widrick, Dorothy Yuk and PQs Jean Boone, Jean Chapman, Shirley Harris, Deanna Robertson and Eileen Yonkers. PQ Shirley Harris is the only dancer still active today. Presently the Unit has 19 active members who perform a number of Egyptian and Tap routines.
The Unit performs at Al Amira Temple Ceremonials and at the Daughters of the Nile Supreme Session whenever possible. We were honored to perform a “Tribute Dance” during the opening ceremony of the 2018 Supreme Session. The Unit will perform, when invited and with the Temple’s permission, at functions of other concordant bodies.
For more information or to attend a practice contact: President Shirley J. Harris, PQ at [email protected].

We enjoy many social events during the summer and at Christmas. We encourage all Nile members to come and try a practice session with us or attend one of our friendly social events.
