Ambassadors Unit
The Ambassadors Unit in Edmonton started long before Al Amira Temple No. 157 was constituted. It was an Edmonton Unit under Sakkara Temple #115 in Calgary. The unit supported Sakkara Temple No. 115 with fundraising, attending Supreme Sessions and supporting the Edmonton Nile Club. The unit was known for their colourful Klondike long dresses and amazing hats which they seemed to change on a regular basis. When Al Amira Temple No. 157 was constituted, it was a natural transition to become Al Amira Temple No. 157 Ambassadors Unit.
For many years, the main fund-raising activity of the Ambassadors was making antipasto for sale. Our current fundraisers are the Edmonton renowned “High Tea” and our fall perogy sale. At Christmas time we often run our own table at the craft sale and/or serve lunch, canteen style to the vendors and attendees.
Our social activities include green house field trips where we plant our own personal pots under the guidance of the instructor. We have run a few very successful paint nights and hope to hold a rustic sign night this coming year. Once a year we get together to make fascinators for our high tea, under the guidance of one of our members.
Join us at one of our meetings and see if we are a “good fit” for you. We welcome all members to all our activities.
Our responsibilities, as per our By-Laws are to assist the Queen as directed at Installations, Ceremonials and Temple Stated Sessions. We do this by guarding the doors from intrusion and greeting and assisting members. You will often see us manning the guest book at functions, taking tickets, and directing people.
On a four-year rotation basis, we are the Official Unit for our Queen at Supreme Session. We meet the third Wednesday of the month (September to June) in Biff’s Lounge at the Al Shamal Shrine Centre.

Al Amira Book Lovers Group
The Al Amira Book Lovers Group was formed 2 years ago and has been very successful with 14 members. We meet on the fourth Thursday of the month at 6:30PM in Biff’s Lounge. Sometimes we meet in the summer and sometimes we don’t. Our rules are very relaxed. We run slightly differently than most book clubs. Rather than all reading the same book, we read the same author and then discuss the books, author’s style etc at our meetings. Some of us read more than one of the books for the author of the month, some read only one book, some don’t finish the book and some even don’t start the book. Life gets in the way and you are welcome to join us whichever category you fit into. Join us one evening and see what you’re missing!

Clown Unit
The Fun-E Clown Unit in Edmonton is Al Amira Temple's newest and “Fun-E-ist” unit. Our purpose is to promote camaraderie among our members, perform temple activities, and to participate in other duties as directed by the Queen or vote of the Temple.
The Clown Unit’s primary goal is fundraising. We plan to do the majority of our fundraising by attending public events, doing magic shows, tying balloon animals, and attending private parties.
You will also find us participating in Al Amira Temple events, and parades around northern Alberta. If you see us out, we love to take pictures with our fans!
We meet the third Tuesday of the month (September to June) in Biff’s Lounge at the Al Shamal Shrine Centre.

Al Amira Temple Dancers
Al Amira Temple Dancers were originally known as the Sakkara Temple Dancers – Edmonton. When Al Amira Temple was constituted in 1991, the Unit became the Al Amira Temple Dancers. The Unit thrived under the leadership of our Dance Directors: Pr. Marjorie Lindsay (1990 – 1993), PQ Deanna Robertson (1994 – 2004), Pr. Beverly Chapman ( 2005 – 2011), PQ Shirley Harris ( 2011 – 2019), and PQ Robyn Beyersbergen ( 2020 - ). The Unit owes a great deal to our choreographer and instructor, Collette Featherstone who has graciously offered her services to the Unit for many years.
The members in 1990 were Princesses Diane Borowski, Dorothy Burke, Margery Dobson, Lois Forbes, Donna Widrick, Dorothy Yuk and PQs Jean Boone, Jean Chapman, Shirley Harris, Deanna Robertson and Eileen Yonkers. PQ Shirley Harris is the only dancer still active today. Presently the Unit has 19 active members who perform a number of Egyptian and Tap routines.
The Unit performs at Al Amira Temple Ceremonials and at the Daughters of the Nile Supreme Session whenever possible. We were honored to perform a “Tribute Dance” during the opening ceremony of the 2018 Supreme Session. The Unit will perform, when invited and with the Temple’s permission, at functions of other concordant bodies.
For more information or to attend a practice contact: President Shirley J. Harris, PQ at alamira157dancers@gmail.com.
